Slackbot in your channels: Big Mode, voice, Frontline, and what admins control
Slackbot stopped being a help bot this year. It joins channels as a teammate, has a full-screen mode for long work, gets two-way voice and video generation in the fall, and now has a preview product for shift workers. This is what is live, what is dated, which plans include it, and the settings an admin should check before a million-user feature reaches a workspace.
For most of its life Slackbot was the thing that told you a reminder had fired. This year it became the most used AI feature Salesforce owns. Slack says it now has more than a million monthly active users, up 145% in a quarter, and Salesforce’s keynote counted more than 200,000 Slackbot skills created by customers.
The reason for the growth is a change of role. Slackbot joins channels now, as a member rather than a tool you summon, and it carries memory, skills and connections to systems outside Slack. Two big pieces arrived in March, and Dreamforce added a full-screen mode, a fall date for voice and video, and a preview product for frontline staff.
If you administer a Slack workspace, or you run Salesforce and are being asked why the Slack team suddenly has an AI roadmap, this is the state of it on September 20.
What Slackbot is now
Slack’s own framing is that Slackbot is an AI teammate that lives in your channels. Practically, that means three things it did not do a year ago.
It reads the channels it is a member of, so an answer is grounded in what the team has been discussing rather than in a blank prompt. It remembers. The March update added a memory feature that learns a user’s preferences over time. And it acts, through AI Skills, which are reusable instruction sets for a task, and through an MCP client that lets it call tools outside Slack.
The March release also brought a deep research mode that runs an investigation for around four minutes, meeting intelligence that works across Zoom, Google Meet and other providers, a desktop presence outside the Slack app, a voice mode for speech in and out, and a native CRM aimed at small businesses that do not run Salesforce.
Rob Seaman, who runs Slack, told VentureBeat the upper bound of use cases is effectively limitless. Treat that as the vendor’s line. What is true is that the feature list is now long enough that most teams will only use a corner of it.
Since the Claudeforce partnership in August, Claude is the default model underneath Slack’s AI. If your governance team has already reviewed Claude for Salesforce in Claude, the model review carries over. The data-flow review does not, because Slackbot reads channels and Salesforce in Claude reads CRM records.
Big Mode, and why a chat bot needed a full screen
Big Mode is a full-screen workspace inside Slack for longer work: research, writing, analysis, generating a file. Big Mode is live now. The design admission in it is that a message thread is a poor place to do a forty-minute piece of work with an AI, and people were doing exactly that.
I would read Big Mode as Slack’s answer to the question of where knowledge work with an assistant happens. The alternatives are a Claude window, a ChatGPT tab or a document. Big Mode keeps it inside the tool that already has the team’s context, which is the same argument Salesforce makes for Coworker inside Lightning.
What is dated for the fall
Two features have a fall 2026 date rather than a switch.
Two-way voice lets you talk to Slackbot and hear it respond, with real actions attached: update a record, start an automation. The March voice mode was speech to text and text to speech. The fall version is a conversation that can do things, which is a different governance question, because a spoken instruction to update a record is an instruction to update a record.
Video generation turns a brief into a clip. Slack has said little beyond that, and I would not plan around it until the release notes describe what it can render and where the output lives.
Slack Frontline is the one to watch if you run a workforce
The new product in the Dreamforce announcement is Slack Frontline, a mobile-first experience for retail, manufacturing and healthcare staff, with shift management, bulletins and support. It is in preview now with general availability at an unnamed future release.
Slack has never been the natural tool for people who do not sit at a desk, and a whole category of frontline apps exists because of that. Frontline is Slack’s attempt to close the gap with a product built for a phone and a shift pattern.
If you have a frontline workforce on a separate app today, the preview is worth a look, with the caveat that a preview is a preview and shift management touches labour law in ways a chat feature does not.
For a Salesforce customer, the interesting version of Frontline is the one where a store associate’s shift, the case they are working and the Slackbot answer all sit in one place. Salesforce’s keynote listed frontline workforce management in Slack as one of its nine product-area updates, and I would expect the two to converge. Nothing published yet says how.
Which plans include it
Slackbot as a channel member, Big Mode and the March feature set are on Business+ and Enterprise+ plans. Free and Pro plan users got limited sampling access from April. Slackforce Surfaces, the live Salesforce panels Slackbot can build, are included on Enterprise+, Business+ and Pro.
That plan boundary is the first thing to check, because the feature people read about and the feature their plan has are not always the same. The boundary is also the reason a company on a mixed set of plans can find that one team has an AI teammate and another has a reminder bot.
What admins should check
Slack’s admin settings for AI features decide whether Slackbot’s AI capabilities are on for a workspace, and Slack’s permissions decide which channels it can be added to. Beyond that, the sources I have do not spell out the control surface in detail, so the list below is the questions rather than the toggles.
Which channels Slackbot may join, and who may add it. A channel member that reads everything in the channel changes what a channel is. Decide whether Slackbot joins by default, by request, or only where an admin adds it, and treat channels with regulated content the way you would treat adding any new member.
What memory retains and for how long. The memory feature learns user preferences. Ask what is stored, where, and whether it is deleted when a user leaves. The conversation-data map I drew for Agentforce is the same exercise, with Slack as the store.
Which external tools the MCP client may reach. An MCP connection from Slackbot to a system is an authenticated path into that system. Inventory them the way you would inventory integrations, because that is what they are.
Who can create skills. A skill is an instruction set that other people run. The question I raised for Coworker’s AI Skills, who teaches the agent and who governs what they taught it, applies here with 200,000 skills already in existence across Slack’s customers.
Where Slackbot stops and your Agentforce agents start. If you run employee agents in Slack, users now have two AI members that can answer questions and take actions, with different permission models. I compared the options, including Anthropic’s Claude Tag, in a separate post. The short answer is that Slackbot knows the channel, the Agentforce agent knows the org, and the workflows that bridge them need to be deliberate.
Understanding the basics
What can Slackbot do in 2026?
Slackbot joins channels as an AI teammate, reads the conversation for context, remembers user preferences, runs reusable AI Skills, connects to outside tools through an MCP client, summarises meetings from Zoom and Google Meet, and has a full-screen Big Mode for longer work. Two-way voice with real actions and video generation are dated for fall 2026.
Which Slack plans include Slackbot AI?
Business+ and Enterprise+. Free and Pro plans received limited sampling access from April 2026. Slackforce Surfaces are included on Pro, Business+ and Enterprise+.
What is Slack Frontline?
A mobile-first Slack experience for retail, manufacturing and healthcare staff, with shift management, bulletins and support features. Slack announced it at Dreamforce 2026 in preview, with general availability planned for a future release.
Does Slackbot use Claude?
Yes. Since the Claudeforce partnership announced in August 2026, Claude is the default model for Slack AI and Slackbot. Anthropic’s separate Claude Tag product is a different thing: a licensed Claude teammate you add to a channel.
A member, not a bot
The mental shift for an admin is that Slackbot is no longer a bot you configure. Slackbot is a member you admit, with memory, tools and a growing set of things it can do on its own.
Admit it the way you would admit a new colleague to a channel: decide what it may read, what it may keep, and what it may touch, and write those decisions down before a million users make them for you.
